Tips For Living Abroad

If you're single and you want to work/live abroad for a fair amount of time, I suggest that you live at a pre-furnished place.  Moving from country-to-country gets EXTREMELY expensive, so you want to maintain agility.  The best way is to limit how much you have while you live in that foreign country.  Clothes and easy-to-ship goods are fine.  But avoid purchasing things like furniture or items that end up costing you a fortunate that you might end being forced to give away.

If you planned on bringing your family, then make sure the company you're working for treats your situation as an ex-patriot.  Meaning that the company pays your entire way both to and from your home country.  One way trips are too risky and you might end up trapped in the foreign country with a load of furniture that you might not be able to ship back.  Also, make sure that the company pays for your housing or at least gives you a contract so that you're not left holding a huge tab once your contract expires or you decide to quit.

Ultimately, the biggest tip I can give is to avoid finding yourself trapped in a situation.  Always make sure you have an escape route.  Whether that's a ticket back home, a limited contract to ship you and your family back home, etc., have a guarantee.  Watch out for golden handcuffs.  Those hurt and can leave you in a bind.
