Something hit me this morning that maybe one of our problems is that we retain too much junk and often times purchase things to help maintain the storage of junk. I've already ranted about Lego, but I was thinking for example about DVD cases, CD cases, game boxes, etc. At my place in Tokyo, I have shelving units to house my DVD cases, etc. If I just put all of my DVDs, CDs, games, etc. on a single folder or spindle, I wouldn't need the casings. So right there, I'm eliminating the need for extra storage units. And of course, the only reason why I want the extra storage units is to make my place look more full.
By that logic, what I've done is decreased the amount of free space in my home, also allowing my place to become unhealthier because of the increased amount of interference from the storage items. However, if I could eliminate these things and purchase items that consolidate or compress these things, my living space would increase by a fair amount.
It's kind of a shame that only while I'm moving that I realize how much junk I've stored up over these past few years. Most of it are boxes for items that I've been keeping around for no good reason. I should've tossed most of these boxes out the day I got them. That would've freed up an enormous of space.
So junk in my book primarily equals wasted space.
