I thought this picture was quite dramatic.  Some people might know that I'm writing a novel about Mars, but seeing an actual photo like this really is something.  What's amazing is seeing just how dark the landscape is.  Imagine, being on a foreign planet and living in perpetual darkness.

In my novel, everyone lives underground in order to minimize exposure to the radiation.  Thick tunnels and the surface naturally shield the residents below.  The ones who work on the surface wear heavy suits to prevent the ultraviolet light from damaging their skin.

I saw in some way that many of the Mars colony would be modular systems that are parachuted from orbit or occasional landers with people and limited supplies to contribute to the colony's growth.  But I kinda wonder if in a setting like this, the explorers would need as much protection during dusk compared to a regular day?  Very interesting stuff....
