Lego 2009

I caught glimpse of some of this year's later products and I have to set that I'm drooling big time!  The two most significant things are, of course, some of the newer town sets, including a bus/pizza/skateboard shop as well as the re-introduction of the Space Police genre (also being labeled as Space Police 3 on the internet).  The Star Wars stuff looks good as well, but I think Lego has truly overdone the amount of redundant sets in the Star Wars series.

Of course, the newest Castle Village set has to be one of the most impressive sets to be seen from the castle genre.  Typically, the castle genre has a large castle, a drawbridge/midsized castle, a tower and some support siege vehicles.  However, this is definitely a major first when it comes to improving the variety of sets associated with the castle genre.

As of now, besides the Castle Village set, the other two major additions that are available are the new construction series and the farm series.  The construction series mostly are the typical dump trucks.  However, the big crane set, while being a replica of the massive crane set from a few years ago, steps up the whole set a few notches by adding a building and a few additional vehicles.  I'm gripping my chair in anticipation to pick up the rest of the line (I only have the dump truck and smaller bulldozer).

Then one of the best things to happen to Lego town in quite a while is in the form of the new farm series.  I'm surprised to see this series come out 30+ years later, but I think Lego has done a fairly good job putting together a few nice sets.  The main farm itself is unique just in having a pair of cows (you can now make hamburger for your McDonalds shops).  Of course, the set suffers from lack of having a spot for the farmers to sleep, but I suppose that's what the upcoming family home will resolve.

The other group of sets to hit the shelves is the Power Miners.  The colors are awful and it seems that they're already having difficulties selling them.  Just the other day, I noticed that ToysRUs holding a major sale on the entire genre.  Considering how ugly most of these sets are, it should be an indication that Lego probably won't be producing much more of these sets in the distant future.

That said, considering the recession, Lego's drive to put out a huge number of products this year is quite daunting, indeed.  I'm wondering if they will be able to manage this level of productivity considering the economic conditions.

Either way, this is going to be one tough year to choose from.
