Theory: informational, niche websites (i.e. verticals) will be considered the most valuable for the Japanese.  Humor sites will not translate well because American humor and Japanese humor drastically differ (e.g. cracked.com).  Also, I feel that fansites won't translate well either (e.g. mania.com) as these would replicate existing fan sites in Japan.  Game sites might have potential because of the general gaming culture in Japan.  However, the proliferation of console games, hand helds and cell phone games would make it a harder market to penetrate compared to web based games.

Other potential successful areas would be anything platform related.  Hence, why pluck.com would be considered invaluable to Japan, since it's a tool/platform.

Demand Studios would work extremely well, imo, because it's an idea that can appeal to the NEET crowds.  I feel that there's a lot of disillusioned people in Japan that refuse to work because of the feeling that the general system is busted.  However, presented with the opportunity to work from home, this system can easily become a huge source of economy in Japan.  Primarily, the targets for this system would be house wives, NEETs, disillusioned youths (e.g. video creation), college students needing extra money and just people who need some weekend work spending money.

An explanation on why these properties could work:
  • Allgetaways.com - Japanese love to travel.
  • botany.com - Japanese love gardens.
  • GardenGuides.com - See above.
  • Golflink.com - Japanese are monstrous fans of golf.  Business is conducted on the golf course.  A mobile tool for people on the golf course might be an excellent selling point.
  • Trails.com - Many people in Japan love the outdoors.  I know quite a few people that take hikes, go snowboarding, etc. to get away from Tokyo and the city life.
  • DailyPuppy.com - Girls are crazy for dogs.  The iPhone app has potential to do well in Japan as a gimmick.
  • ehow.com - If translated, this site can be huge.  Also, if the Japanese can add their input on how-tos (e.g. bonsai plants, wearing a kimono, table etiquette) and translate it, it would be a huge boon.
  • Livestrong.com - The Japanese are extremely health conscious.  Combine the heahtly living aspect with the community and tools and this site can explode in Japan.
