I have to admit that I like the J-Pop group Perfume. Their music is kinda addicting and soothing at the same time (damn it iTunes! Start selling them in the US!), In particular, I like Nocchi in the group. She's a cutie. But reading through the various comments on BBS's and youtube channels, I encountered a little bizarre thing that focuses on A-Chan.
Seems like people blast how she constantly wears these baggy dresses in every video, whereas the other two wear shorts or pants. The accusation is that she's fat so she wears these long dresses to hide her bodily dimensions. Of course, Japanese fat transcends the definition of American fat. And Japanese pop fat takes this definition to a whole new level (i.e. anorexia is the norm and accepted in those circles as well as psychotic crash diets). So while people like those on the message board I've linked may find her pictures with normal t-shirts perfectly acceptable, studio executives and inside critics may feel otherwise.
Now, I'm not trying to stir up anything, but just speculating on A-Chan's little fashion fetish. Could it be that stardom and a sponsorship by a chocolate manufacturer has led our courageous little star to indulge herself?
As for my comparison to Ann Wilson from Heart, well, the inside joke about her was that they used to force her to wear black, stick her in a dark room and take limited shots from above the waist to hide her dieting issues. Watch classics like "Never" to see what I'm talking about.
One good point about A-Chan, unlike Ann Wilson, is that she's quite young and probably doesn't suffer from Ann's constant eating disorder battles. In fact, it's probable that A-Chan simply likes long dresses for her stage fashion. They even explained that the costume decisions was to help distinguish the girls on stage. So it makes one wonder where and how these rumors get started?
Just on a side note, I think A-Chan's body is fine as is. It's her nose that needs a lot of work. You can land a plane on that thing!
