My old Dell Inspiron 600M, while a fairly faithful machine, can't go much longer. It's been lagging big time and way too hot to handle. So finally after much deliberating, I plunked down some change and got an Inspiron 15. Not too bad. 4GB of Ram, 15.6" HD Widescreen monitor, Core 2 Duo processor with a 320 GB hard drive. Originally, I wanted to run a VMWare version of Ubuntu on it, but that didn't turn out as I expected. The screen was really small and I didn't have a lot of confidence in the performance. So instead, I dual booted my system using a software called Wubi. It sucks that I can't optimally run both Windows and VMWare/Ubuntu simultaneously.
That said, I have Ubuntu 9.04 running finally. Everything has been pretty smooth thus far. I can use dual monitors, sound works fine, wireless has no issues, I've been able to load most of the software without any problems either. The only stumbling block I found was running the normal PDT Eclipse package. There is no 64 bit version so you need to use the 64 bit version instead. Then you must manually install the PDT packages to get it working. But there's a few good instructions on how to do that.
All in all, I'm happy to say the least. My other laptop is over 3 years old now and was becoming painfully slow. I can start doing some serious work again.
