I found an interesting and credible post from the LA Times that discusses our beloved Governator's proposal to slash California's welfare programs. Some important programs include medical insurance for low-income children and Cal Grants cash assistance to college and university students.
Now, I'm a bit torn on the whole welfare system here in California. I think the biggest problem has been its historical and stereotypical abuse. California has a bit of a negative connotation when it comes to giving free handouts. When in doubt, move to Cali to get your free food and housing.
That said, I've known quite a few people that have been able to fully utilize Cal Grants and welfare without abusing the system and make something of themselves. The across-the-board type of cut is definitely ridiculous.
More importantly, it raises the question:
WHERE THE HELL DID ALL THE MONEY DISAPPEAR TO?
If you look at California, you really have to wonder what happened to it in the past oh, say 6 years? Before, it was one of the most prosperous states. Now, it faces bankruptcy. Some say it's due to the mortgage problems. But even that somehow seems confounding since you have a good portion of the world's wealth in a single spot!
Even in raising state taxes here, the governator is still "forced" to cut welfare spending. The truth is that he should nail all the upper class here. Anyone making over $300k/year should be taxed 50% and above. Tier it just like Japan does. Oh but because the governator has all his rich friends in Hollywood and Beverly Hills, he's going to make an example out of the poor.
Well, on the other hand, you have to credit the dumbass majority here for electing this guy. What were you thinking anyway???????????
