I don't have anything against gays as a group. I think gays are great. But the one thing that has bothered me is the whole notion that gays would want to be in the military....or rather anyone who truly wants to be in the military.
Now, that this law has been repealed, they're calling this "a step forward in equality." I have a HUGE problem with this statement because of something that George Carlin once said. He talked about how it was so strange that the military of all groups wanted to ban gays. However, considering that the US is, for the most part, anti-gay in issues like marriage, you would think that the military is the last institution in the US to want a ban on this group. For those who can't read between the lines, in short, Carlin means why not send people you don't like to the front line slaughter? We already do that by targeting people with no future (I'm not isolated in this idea; check out an old Beavis and Butthead episode where the pair try to enter the military and look at the label on the recruiting video). So if you add a group that the church and other portions of US generally still have issue with, let's add them to the boiling pot too!
Regardless, this to me isn't equality. This is an equal chance to get killed. In a legal sense, equality would be making gay marriages legal and providing gays the same benefits current couples enjoy. And from a social stance, it would be to make people with alternative lifestyles not feel any social pressure to conform to a standard.
Of course, you still have large segments in society that want to display their patriotism through serving in the military. And of course, gays, like anyone else, should have that right, as this repealed act would allow. However, part of me kinda wonders if the government suddenly woke up one morning and realized that what Carlin had stated was true. That the government could literally kill two, uh, birds with one stone.
