Why Is Google Collecting Unsecured Data?

There was a report how Google performed illegal activities in collecting data from insecure networks in South Korea. The claim was "for research" but what kind of research would be needed in grabbing things such as email and other private data?

Google, along with Facebook, quickly are becoming massive data repositories on people.  You have to wonder just what the company does with this data.  And for whom.

Considering that the company is in bed with the US government, you can easily speculate that they can spy on behalf of the government (or other governments in the company's favor). After all, that's how the whistleblower in Japan was narrowed down (and Google Japan easily cooperated with the Japanese officials in this case).

It's getting scary how both companies are becoming clear access points to the internet in some way.  Although you're not required to use either at the moment, there are so many other companies around that are dependent upon their services. So how can you not avoid being observed at some point?
