In linking the failure of the DREAM and immigration act to the recent Arizona shoots, Berkeley's Chancellor is getting some rebuffs. Although I'm not a fan of the so-called DREAM act and immigration issues in Arizona, to link it to the incident demonstrates, imo, the Chancellor's personal agenda getting in the way with facts. The fact of the shooting is that the kid was a nut and the kid somehow had access to a semi-automatic. I seriously doubt the rhetoric involved from the DREAM act and immigration drove that kid to pull the trigger. The Chancellor condones the tolerance of hate speech that is implied through things like the DREAM act.
If anything, the kid was more of an anarchist who hated all the stupid people around him. More than likely, he saw the Gabrielle Giffords as just another puppet figure of the elite and decided to make history for himself. Although the current political debates between both parties are troubling to say the least, I highly doubt the kid really cared about the specific language used. If anything, he probably just wished that they both just shut up, which is why he pulled the trigger rather indiscriminately on someone on the so-called Left.
I think people should just accept the fact that society has it's loose cannons and that when it happens, it happens. Sometimes some people cannot be saved, no matter what you do. And it's more of a matter of the desire to be saved. In this kid's case, I'm pretty sure he was conscientious enough to understand the consequences of what he was doing. Kinda like Kevin Spacey's John Doe character in the movie Se7en. The best you can do in situations like these, imo, is just make sure they don't have access to something that endangers the lives of others.
