Conspiracy Theory: Egypt Turning Internet Off A Test Bed?

For those conspiracy theory fanatics, I would like to propose a possible theory as to the whole Egyptian switching off their ISPs to the public as a possible test to see how a nation would possibly react if the internet no longer was made available to them.  Considering that the US has proposed such a power to be granted to the president in times of emergency, I wouldn't find it far fetched if the US government (or any colluding entity) wanted to perform some sort of social test on another part of the world to see what the net (excuse the pun) effect would be. Of course, we're still receiving updates, but the type of information coming through might be considered questionable, especially if it's big media who reports such so-called evidence (because the information could potentially be filtered).

Then you might ask, well why Egypt?  Well, if it's the US or any other major power pulling the strings for the said purpose, then I would suggest that it's because you need to test it out on another more "expendable" area.  The US wouldn't be able to pull the plug from day one here just like that.  If under similar circumstances a mass anti-government upheaval would to occur in the US, pulling a plug that would blind the US naturally would also hurt many pieces of infrastructure that holds up the US.  Pieces of infrastructure that the government and the supporting bodies would need to survive (since more or less these days many crucial businesses are run through the internet).  But in the utter emergency that such a situation would be required, you supposedly would need to see how the rest of the place could potentially react.

Naturally, all of this simply speculation from a simple, paranoid individual.  However, sometimes you cannot discount the nefarious nature of governments and to the extents they do things to maintain their control over people.
