Smurf Attacks on My Router?

I noticed the past few nights that my router would periodically go down. Tonight, my router had a worse problem and seemed to die anytime I'd use more than one application at once that would make a network connection. But after reading some articles, what might've happened is that some new routers came alive in my neighborhood and would conflict with the channel that I used. The default channel was 1 and the suggestion was to change it since the average person tends to leave the factory defaults in (guilty). So, I changed the channel and it seemed to cure my issue for the moment.

I did make a firmware upgrade to the latest for my Netgear Router, but that didn't seem to help. Funny thing was that when I checked the logs, it seemed as though I received a "smurf attack." So maybe it was the new routers and my devices slamming my router, causing the router to reboot itself. I did check the logs subsequently, even clearing it a few times to ensure that it wasn't a smurf attack. Furthermore, the IP address seemed to originate from the router itself, leaving me to believe that some odd conflict occurred. I'll have to put my router through the ringer by playing something more network intensive, but it seems to be functioning fine now (crosses fingers).
